Public Safety Policies

Northwestern follows a strict set of policies to ensure our campus is safe. Learn more about our policies for weapons, fireworks, bicycles, in-line skates, and more.

Weapons Possession and Fireworks

The use, possession, and storage of all firearms, dangerous weapons, explosives, or other dangerous articles are prohibited on all properties owned, leased, or otherwise controlled by University of Northwestern. Law enforcement officers duly authorized to carry such instruments are exempt.

Any person violating this policy will be subject to disciplinary action.

The following are not permitted anywhere on the properties owned and/or operated by University of Northwestern and Northwestern Media: firearms, BB guns, Airsoft guns, paintball guns, pellet guns (or any other device that propels objects using compressed air), ammunition, swords, spears, bows & arrows, blow guns, knives over five inches long (excluding kitchen knives), etc.

Failure to comply with this policy may result in a fine up to $100 from Student Development, the confiscation of items involved, and/or disciplinary action. Any resident possessing a firearm in or around a residence hall may be subject to immediate suspension. Students should consult the Resident Director, Associate Dean of Residence Life, or the Director of Public Safety concerning appropriateness of any questionable items.

Possession of fireworks (e.g., bottle rockets, Roman candles, firecrackers, etc.), stink bombs, explosive materials and/or devices is prohibited in the residence halls. Violators are subject to legal prosecution and/or disciplinary action by the college, which may result in a fine up to $100.

Bicycles, Skateboards, and In-Line Skates

University of Northwestern is designated as a pedestrian campus with the safety and welfare of the campus community in mind. Bicycles, skateboards, and in-line skates must be operated under control at all times and are not permitted in any building. Violation of this policy may result in confiscation of the equipment and disciplinary action. Pedestrians always have the right of way on campus.

Parking Permit Refunds

Parking permit refunds are given at the end of each quad. To obtain a refund for your parking permit, you must detach it from your vehicle and present it at the Public Safety office. The refund will appear on your statement. No refunds are given after 3rd quad.

Additional policies are addressed in the student handbook distributed to new students each year during new student orientation and posted online for continuing students.
