About the School
The School of Nursing seeks to provide Christ-centered, biblically based, service-focused nursing education, equipping individuals with the skills and abilities required of professional nurses to effectively serve Christ and to assume servant leadership roles while providing ministry and service to humankind.
Majors and Programs
The School of Nursing offers a degree in Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The four-year BSN degree consists of pre-nursing coursework with two years of core curriculum and prerequisite courses (a minimum of 62 credits), followed by the four-semester nursing program.
The Traditional Path starts each year in January (Spring Term) and August (Fall Term) and has the summers off. The Accelerated Path starts in August (Fall Term) each year and goes through all four terms back-to-back. If a student begins UNW as a freshman, they can complete their degree in four years (eight semesters). All prerequisites and core-curriculum courses are completed in years 1–2. During years 3–4 students focus on nursing courses.
If a student took courses outside the UNW, they will undergo an acceptance process which could result in a reduction of class load for the pre-nursing requirement. Full details can be obtained by contacting the Registrar’s Office. Students will complete all nursing specific courses while at Northwestern.
This pre-licensure program provides a strong foundation in biblical studies, liberal arts, and the sciences.
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) pre-licensure program is an accredited program from the Minnesota Board of Nursing and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Nursing students who have completed all program and degree requirements will need to pass the NCLEXRN® in order to practice as a registered nurse (RN).
Why we do what we do
Each student is important to us. Faculty and staff take time to know students on an individual basis. Our desire is to ensure students have the necessary support and resources in order to be successful in the program. During the first two years of a students’ time at UNW, they have regular meetings with the Pre-Nursing Student Success Program Coach. Once students begin their nursing courses, a student mentor and a nursing faculty advisor will be assigned to support a during the program.
