If choosing a college major feels overwhelming—or if you’re the kind of student who lights up about several subjects, not just one—you’re not alone. At the University of Northwestern – St. Paul, we often work with students who have a clear sense of purpose but find that no single major captures it all. That’s why we offer something different: Interdisciplinary Studies.
This flexible, build-your-own major is designed for students who want to combine their interests in a way that honors their calling. It’s one of the most customizable academic options on our campus—and it’s rooted in thoughtful mentorship and Christ-centered purpose.
What Is Interdisciplinary Studies?
Interdisciplinary Studies is an academic program that lets students combine coursework from two or more areas of study into one cohesive major. With the guidance of caring faculty, students create a personalized academic plan that reflects their God-given gifts, passions, and future goals.
U.S. News & World Report asserts, “Interdisciplinary programs give students the freedom and flexibility to forge their own paths. They empower students to pursue varied interests, which can lead to a more personalized and engaging educational experience.”
It’s a great fit for students who are:
- Passionate about more than one subject
- Interested in charting their own path
- Considering careers not covered by a traditional major
What Makes UNW’s Program Unique?
UNW’s Interdisciplinary Studies major is both flexible and academically strong. Every student works with a faculty committee to shape their major, ensuring that it’s purposeful, well-structured, and meets the same academic standards and accreditation requirements as any other program at Northwestern.
Here’s what sets it apart:
- You choose the focus: Students combine two distinct disciplines (sometimes more) to create a personalized major.
- You can bring in outside credits: Up to half of the major credits can be completed at another accredited institution—great for those who want a degree from UNW in an area we don’t offer.
- You won’t go it alone: Faculty from each discipline walk alongside you to help ensure your coursework is balanced, meaningful, and career-aligned.
What Could This Look Like?
Below are just a few examples—some built recently, others from years past—all tailored to real students and their unique callings.

A Growing Trend in Higher Education
UNW isn’t alone in offering this kind of major—but we are proud to offer it in a setting that prioritizes faith, mentoring, and whole-person education. Interdisciplinary programs are growing across the country as students and employers recognize that many of today’s careers live between disciplines, not just within one.
According to QS Global Education News, interdisciplinary degrees are on the rise worldwide, with graduates often earning higher-than-average salaries.
