Northwestern Announces New Minor in Biomedical Technology

By Northwestern on Wednesday, January 28, 2026

ST. PAUL, Minn., January 28, 2026 –As part of University of Northwestern – St. Paul’s (UNW) campaign to Amplify the Gospel, their strategic initiative setting the vision for UNW by 2030, the School of Science & Engineering is expanding its offerings to include a minor in Biomedical Technology. Students will learn to practice their skills as engineers in medical contexts, applying their field of study with living systems. Adding this minor to an engineering degree will grow student’s practical knowledge of how to develop physiological sensors, instruments, and devises for both diagnostic, and therapeutic applications.

While at Northwestern, the Biomedical Technology students will engage in hands-on learning opportunities both through lab work and practical application, research, and industry specific internships.

Dean of the School of Science & Engineering, Dr. Michael Jacobson, noted, “The new biomedical minor enhances and extends the engineering programs with courses in biology, physiology, biotechnology, and biomedical instrumentation, along with elective courses in anatomy, biomechanics, research, and an internship. A graduate in engineering with this minor is well prepared to support the biomedical engineering industries in Minnesota.”

Andrew Dwyer, a current senior entering the field of biomedical technology post-grad, spoke to the gap filled by this new offering. “This new minor in Biomedical Technology will equip students with specialized knowledge and skills to design and develop life-saving technologies, while preparing them for successful careers in the healthcare and medical device industries”
