Jodi Whitworth -- Already on the Beat

This University of Northwestern senior has the broadcast finesse big media makers want, and her demo reel proves it.

It all started on YouTube

Jodi Whitworth’s reel caught the eye of a television producer, who was browsing YouTube to recruit young reporters for a new fall season pilot on one of Viacom's national networks. An e-mail exchange later, Jodi agreed to be the Twin Cities representative for the newscast, digging up local stories that will broadcast nationwide this fall.

Hold the phone, scholarship on line two

Apparently, Jodi’s new beat wasn’t excitement enough. On June 21, she was honored with a giant $2,000 check at the 2012 Diamond Awards as the Alliance of Women in Media’s (AWM-MN) Diversity Scholarship winner.

AWM later told Jodi she was the only one to personally turn in her application and include a demo reel, making her an obvious choice from the crowd of applicants across Minnesota.

Jodi told us one of her highlights that evening with AWM was meeting other African-American women who serve as media professionals. They encouraged her and offered their friendship to Jodi as she journeys into her own career.

Coming to a screen near you

For a little icing on the cake, the president of Clear Channel (AWM scholarship sponsor) called Jodi in for “coffee” to chat about her media future.

“When stuff like this happens, I don’t know how to react,” Jodi told Northwestern. “All of these things have fallen into my lap, and it’s such a blessing.”
