Digital Media Arts—Animation Major

Step into the digital world of 3D animation!

What is it?

The Digital Media Arts degree is a multidisciplinary major, combining coursework from both the Department of Art & Design and the Department of Communication.

At UNW, you can:

  • Develop your creative problem-solving skills,
  • Sharpen your abilities as an artist, communicator and producer,
  • and integrate spiritual values in the field of digital media.

How did it start?

Developed in 2005 after Northwestern professors met with animators from PIXAR and other major film professionals, the Digital Media Arts major equips students with a breadth of knowledge computer animation, visual arts, design, 3D multimedia, effective communication and storytelling.

What will I be doing?

Starting with the basics of visual arts, graphic design, and communication and building up from there, you won’t leave here without the knowledge and skills you need for a job in digital animation, video game development or other creative venues!

In this exciting program, you'll learn how to:

  • Understand aesthetic concepts, effective communication theories and historical understanding
  • Use appropriate visual and audio technology to develop and deliver expert animation
  • Appreciate artistic expression and effective communication
  • Apply ethical and spiritual values to the field of digital animation.

You'll dabble in both tradition and digital animation, collecting skills that will prepare you for an entry level professional career.

Instructors take special care to emphasize the application of critical thinking, effective communication, research, and technical production.
