Mary Kay Geston, D.M.A.
Adjunct Instructor of Music/Student Teacher Supervision
Dr. Mary Kay Geston is an adjunct faculty, supervising Student Teachers. From 1999 to 2013, Dr. Geston was associate professor of music at University of Northwestern where she conducted the Women’s Chorale and Chamber Singers, taught choral conducting, choral methods, voice, and supervised student teachers. Previously, she was visiting associate professor of choral studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder (2011-12), director of choral activities at Northern State University in South Dakota (1995-99), and directed Manitou Singers at St. Olaf College (2008). In 2012 Dr. Geston was named Choral Director of the Year by the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota (ACDA-MN).
Geston received advanced degrees in choral conducting and literature from University of Colorado (D.M.A.) and University of Minnesota (M.M.), as well as the Bachelor of Arts degree in vocal performance and teaching certification from North Dakota State University. She is the artistic director and conductor of Great River Chorale, a St. Cloud-based community choir, serves on the F. Melius Christiansen Endowment Fund committee, and is an artistic advisor to the Minnesota Chorale.
During her tenure at University of Northwestern the Women’s Chorale has performed at ACDA-MN conferences in 2010 and 2001, at the Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) 2006 Midwinter Clinic, and at the North Central ACDA conference in 2004. In 2003 the Women's Chorale performed with the Minnesota Orchestra and maestro Edo de Waart.
Dr. Geston is a sought-after guest conductor and has led choral workshops in Taiwan and Korea, and directed all-state or honor choirs in Kentucky, Colorado, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota. She has presented interest sessions and served on panels at ACDA, National Association for Music Educators, MMEA, National Association of Teachers of Singing, and American Guild of Organists conferences in Minnesota, Iowa, Texas, North Dakota and South Dakota.
