John S. Herlihy

Assistant Professor, Director of Bands

As Director of Bands, John Herlihy teaches Symphonic Band, Jazz Band and Brass Ensemble, as well as instrumental methods and advanced instrumental conducting. Prior to his appointment at Northwestern, he served as the Supervisor of Performing Arts and Director of Bands at public high schools in Long Island, New York and southeastern Pennsylvania.

Herlihy has maintained an active performance schedule as a conductor and freelance musician having worked with the Rutgers University Symphony Band, the Suffolk County Music Educators Association Division III Symphonic Band, the Atlantic Wind Symphony, the Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra, the C.W. Post Symphony Orchestra, the Montgomery County, Pennsylvania Honors Band and the New York Mid-Island Honors Band. In addition, Herlihy has conducted or performed in pit orchestras for numerous theatrical productions throughout Long Island, NY, New York City and the Philadelphia region. Of particular note was a production of Shenandoah, performed in Damrosch Park at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City.

Herlihy holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from West Chester University in Pennsylvania and a Master of Science in Music Education from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College in New York. Additional studies include a Supervisory Certification in Music from Temple University, and he is currently completing his doctoral studies in Conducting/Music Education at the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he studies with William Berz.

Herlihy holds association memberships in MENC: The National Association for Music Education, the National Band Association, the College Music Society, the College Band Directors National Association, the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE), the National Council of Supervisors of Music Education, the American School Band Directors Association and the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association, where he served as President and Festival Coordinator for District 11 and Region VI Chairperson for southeastern Pennsylvania.
