What is Forensics?

Forensics is the practice and study of different types of public speaking and oral interpretation. As part of the Forensics team at the University of Northwestern – St. Paul, students will participate in events to further public speaking skills. Students will be involved in a variety of speaking events, receive one-on-one coaching, and increase their competency for public speaking.

University of Northwestern is a member of the Twin Cities Forensic League and competes with other colleges and universities in speech tournaments. Students may enter any of the following categories:

  • Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Parliamentary Debate

Platform Speaking

  • After Dinner Speaking
  • Communication Analysis
  • Informative Speaking
  • Persuasive Speaking

Interpretive Speaking

  • Poetry Interpretation
  • Program Oral Interpretation
  • Prose Interpretation


Twin Cities Forensics League

The Twin Cities Forensics League consists of colleges from around Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota and North Dakota. Students from teams gather for tournaments at participating schools to put their skills into practice. Each competition focuses on a specific genre of speech, and the students practice this genre with the team during workshop hours.
